Baltic Sea Action Summit (BSAS), held 10.2.2010, has so far generated over 110 commitments on behalf of the Baltic Sea. BSAG foundation is responsible of gathering the commitments and the overall content of the Summit. The foundation gathers concrete commitments for the Baltic Sea from public and private sectors as well as from other actors e.g. NGOs. A commitment, at its best, is a turn of a new leaf and a strategic input to saving the Baltic Sea.

Current commitment situation:

· 111 commitments

· From each problem area defined by HELCOM

· From each country around the Baltic Sea

· All have a direct impact or an indirect impact on the state of the Baltic Sea

“We have already exceeded our expectations with the number of commitments collected. This shows that everyone can take part in the work on behalf of the Baltic Sea. You help the sea by doing what you are best at” Anna Kotsalo-Mustonen, one of the founders of BSAG, sums up.

“This is a joint effort like never seen before. The cooperation truly exceeds all boarders between countries and also between the private and public sectors.” The Summit is hosted by President Tarja Halonen, Prime minister Vanhanen and of BSAG’s Chairman of the Board Ilkka Herlin. Heads of state from countries around the Baltic Sea also make their own commitments.

Organizations that have already made commitments include: Bain & Company Nordic, Reval Hotels, IBM, Lloyd’s, Siemens, Wärtsilä, Det Norske Veritas, St.Petersburg wastewater treatment plant, Swedish Shipowners Association, National Board of Taxes, Port of Klaipeda as well as several other small and large organizations. Up to date list of all 111 commitments can be found at http://www.bsas.fi/commitments/all-commitments. More information about the foundation: www.bsag.fi.
